The military has a history of failing to address sexual assault.
- 2011 Air Force Basic Training scandal; to date, 59 alleged sexual assault victims have come forward implicating 32 Basic Military Training Instructors.
- 2003 Air Force Academy scandal; 12% of women graduates admitted to being raped or being subjected to attempted rape.
- 1996 Aberdeen scandal; 12 Army officers (commissioned and non-commissioned) were charged for various sexual assaults.
- 1991 Tailhook scandal; over one weekend, 83 women and 7 men were assaulted by sailors and marines at a Las Vegas hotel.
These are examples of major scandals.
The Pentagon estimates that 80% to 90% of sexual assaults go unreported.
